Beginner Math Treasure Hunts

Teaching math can be intimidating, but the mystery and hand-waving which often accompany math education happens when we focus on memorization, rather than comprehension.  Treasure hunts are a great way to tap young students' excitement for discovery, while helping them develop an intuitive understanding of STEM concepts, without them even realizing that they're learning!

Our Beginner Math Treasure Hunt Bundle includes four treasure hunts.

  • Math 1: Pirates!
  • Math 1: Animal Adventure
  • Graphs 1: Fairytales
  • Geometry 1: Secret Decoder

Four ready-to-go educational treasure hunts designed for students to practice primary school math concepts.

  1. Math 1: Pirates! Treasure Hunt: Practice addition and subtraction, counting by fives and tens, reading bar and pie charts, telling time, knowing shapes, and reading a ruler.
  2.

  3. Math 1: Animal Adventure Treasure Hunt: Practice addition and subtraction to 20, measuring with a ruler, counting by twos, reading a bar graph, finding the perimeter of a square, recognizing one quarter, and using cardinal directions to navigate.
  4.

  5. Graphs 1: Fairytale Treasure Hunt: Practice reading horizontal bar charts, pie charts relating equivalent terms (like 1/2, half, and 50%), and interpreting bar charts using relative terms like "least" and "best".
  6.

  7. Geometry 1: Secret Decoder Treasure Hunt: Decode the secret messages to find the location of the next clue by solving the key code hidden in geometry puzzles. Students practice finding the area and perimeter of rectangles, triangles and circles.

Kids get the most out of their education when they are engaged and interested.  The American Academy of Pediatrics found that "play usually enhances curiosity, which facilitates memory and learning."1  Learning should be fun, and we design our treasure hunts to make the most of that natural curiosity.

At The Treasure Hunt Builder we use device-free adventures to encourage students to apply and practice their STEM knowledge. Our treasure hunts are quick to set up and designed to engross students in an hour of fun so they’re not focused on the fact that they are practicing skills while out on a quest around their homes.
